How to maintain the Christmas colour in your home
The 12th December is Poinsettia Day, a time to celebrate this beautiful plant, which we have come to associate with Christmas since its introduction into the United States by the Minister to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett in 1828.
Caring for your Poinsettia
- Ensure the cellophane protects your Poinsettia from the cold air as you transport it home
- Place in a light area, not in direct sunlight or a draught, at a constant temperature between 15oC – 22oC
- Do not place them next to fruit or vegetables as this will cause them to wilt
- Water when the compost feels dry, letting it stand for 30 minutes on a saucer for the water to drain away, this will prevent root rot
Facts about Poinsettia
- Botanical name is Euphorbia pulcherrima, meaning most beautiful flower
- Poinsettias require 14 hours of total darkness for 8 weeks to achieve the Christmas colour
