Shrewsbury Flower Show Garden 2016 - Garden Design Ideas - Landscape Design - Garden Planner - Hornby Garden Designs - Garden Feature Ideas - Design My Garden - Shrewsbury - UK
Our design for this year’s Shrewsbury Flower was centered on the theme ‘The Land of Hope and Glory’.
After doing some ‘digging’ about the themed song, which some believe should be the National Anthem, we struck upon an idea – The Great British Tea Party.
With detailed and intricate planting our design utilised contrasting textures and colours to create a Union Jack flag, while locally sourced turf created the mainstay of the design.
David Austin roses were hand picked for their brilliant white and red head colour, and strong fragrance.
Hydrangea Pinky-winky with tiny star–like flowers on their dense conical heads and a spicy scent, were the star performers.
The garden was an instant hit and became a haven for insects, with both the Russian sage and white lavender attracting pollinators in vast numbers, testament to how a well-designed planting scheme works.
It was noticeable too that the garden had an inviting sensory appeal for visitors throughout the course of the show, enticing them to bend down so as to better appreciate the wonderful fragrance of the roses. Others simply ran their fingers through the tall delicate trails of lavender and Russian sage to release the scent.
The plants we used in our flag motif were:
White – David Austin Shrub Rose Desdomona, Lavender, Itea illicifolia, Hydrangea Pinky-Winky.
Red – David Austin Shrub Roses Munstead Wood, Darcy Bussell, Lobelia cardinalis, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Firetail’.
Blue - Perovskia Blue Spire with a wonderful scent and late season colour.
At the centre of the scheme was a table and chairs decorated with Union Jack colours with bunting suspended from cross beams. The design of the garden was then completed with hanging lanterns filled with cut roses.
After a wonderful Shrewsbury Flower Show in the hot summer sun, we were pleased to have our hard work awarded a Silver Gilt Medal.
